Ida Rubinstein (1917). Romaine Brooks (American, 1874-1970). Oil on canvas. Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Beautiful and free, Ida Rubinstein (Russian, 1885-1960) not only fueled the Ballets Russes with her sensuality, she also inspired many artists and more particularly the painter Romaine Brooks with whom she had a passionate love affair and to whom she was a striking nude model (as Venus) as well as for this portrait.
